About Program

Adventure and education collide during our journey through the lush jungles, snow-capped peaks, and enchanting sites of Peru and Patagonia. Treading in the footsteps of the Inca, we gain insight into an ancient culture as we explore the famous ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Setting up camp in a remote community in the Sacred Valley of Peru, we get hands-on experience understanding the important role that llamas play in environmental conservation and sustainability in the region. Embarking on a rafting trip down the famed Futaleufu River, we experience some of Patagonia’s most exhilarating rapids. Settling into a homestay on a traditional estancia, we immerse ourselves in the Chilean gaucho way of life. Exploring the effects of climate change on the melting glaciers in Patagonia we understand the complex conservation issues facing Patagonia. Embarking on a five-day trek amidst the towering peaks and glacial lakes of the famous Torres del Paine National Park, we are awed by the beauty.

South America Program Ratings

I think it was really good for me and I think the experience was valuable for me. I have very little I would change about it. South America has a lot to offer. I would do again if I could. Even though some things don't go according to plan it still feels like in the end the trip worked out. I enjoyed the different places we went to. Also it was nice getting to know the group and sharing memories and laughs. It made me certain on what I wanted to do after the program and continue my education in college.

Pros
  • culture
  • learning
  • fun
Cons
  • not always what you expect

SouthAm

I had such a good semester in South America. I experienced many new things including white water rafting, A homestay, weaving classes, language classes, and a group backpacking trip. I made many good friends. I tried new food and experienced many lenses of culture. My favorite activity was the student planned module where we were able to choose what we did throughout the week and where we stayed. The best part was a Via Ferrata day where we climbed up the side of the mountain and repelled down. The instructors were supportive and insured we had fun at every stop. Overall I recommend the South America semester. I believe it to be the most adventurous ARCC semester you could do.

Pros
  • Cultural immersion
  • Language immersion
  • Hiking and camping

ARCC

ARCC gap programs was a great program that offers both international and domestic trips for students on a gap year. I went to Chile and Peru and had an awesome time. It was a 10 week program that first went to Patagonia in Chile and then to the Sacred Valley in Peru. It was a good introduction to outside living and activities while not being too intensive. It was incredible being able to visit places like Torres Del Paine national park and Machu Picchu. Overall I had a great time and would recommended this program to students looking to take a gap year.

Good Time

This trip was a very formative experience for me. I gained a lot of experience with farm work, backpacking, and learned a lot of Spanish. I was able to meet a lot of very interesting people who work for the projects that the trip entails and made a lot of friends within my group. The trip is a mix of camping and hostel stays, but it’s more hostel stays than camping. Another thing you should know is that it’s more of an experiential learning trip than an adventure trip. Apart from Torres Del Paine, Futaleufú rafting, and Peruvian ruin exploration, most of the trip is spent doing experiential learning (not to say that it’s a bad thing.)

ARCC REVIEW

Be prepared to learn about yourself, especially the bad stuff. You aren’t alone but you don’t have your family with you like at home. Make sure you are mature enough, you don’t want to go out there and then have to depend on so many people around you. You should be independent. And if you aren’t, you will learn how to be. Have an open mind and know that you aren’t going on a luxurious vacation. You are going to travel and learn more than you know, have an open mind to the world around you and respect the locals.

Pros
  • You can see the world
  • Experience authentic traveling by being able to see things besides just the really popular sites
  • You are able to learn from locals
Cons
  • Food can be tough
  • not much personal space/ alone time
  • You may not get along with everyone and then you are stuck with them for months

ARCC Review

I have had an overall positive experience with ARCC. I however think that there needs to be most rest days incorporated. I also think that the sleeping accommodations could be better. I have enjoyed this time traveling to countries that I probably would've not been too with this group. I have also made some great relationships during this time that hopefully will last a lifetime. I think that chile could be taken out or shortened but Peru has been the time of my life and I have enjoyed learning about the culture.

Pros
  • Learn to travel internationally in a group setting
  • Getting out of your comfort zone
  • Meeting life long friendships and making connections
Cons
  • Not enough recovery time
  • Need more alone time
  • More food options

Arcc review

Arcc was an amazing experience and gave me time to reflect on the things I needed and to meet great people. Fully submerging in the experience and sitting in the challenges made me grow as an individual and I wouldn’t change anything. Moving forward I feel more grounded with myself and more capable of becoming a well rounded adult. This trip was nothing less than incredible and I recommend for people who don’t have stable ground or are craving for more in life. And of course beautiful views. :))

Pros
  • Amazing people
  • Beautiful Views
  • Time to reflect
Cons
  • Challenges with food
  • Challenges with places to stay
  • Conflict with people

ARCC South America A

I absolutely loved my gap semester with ARCC. This program has awesome traditions and curriculum. I have learned so much not only about myself but about culture, social justice, and everything about life in general. My group leaders made the experience so amazing by always providing such strong support. I was so thankful to have them as my leaders. This trip was so amazing for my mental health and allowed me to grow in so many ways. I can’t wait to implement all the things I’ve learned into my daily life at home.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I was to do this trip again, I think it would be interesting to not use my phone at all. When we got our phones back, I used it everyday because I had a service plan but sometimes I wish I would have been more present.
