Global Experiences Generation Study Abroad Scholarship

Global Experiences offers scholarships for both summer and semester terms in any of the organization’s 11 global cities. Full scholarships are available for semester-long programs, with special consideration given to those who are underrepresented in study abroad programs. Global Experiences also contributes to those who receive a Pell Grant or Benjamin A. Gillman scholarship, for both in person and virtual programs.

I chose to go abroad to Australia with Global Experiences not really knowing what to expect. I knew I wanted to go abroad to Australia, but I didn't know exactly what that experience would entail. Andrea, the program advisor for Sydney, made this an amazing experience in several areas. She worked hard to make sure that my internship was a good fit for me, and found things for my cohort to do based on our interests. GE made discovering Sydney so much easier, and I definitely recommend! Thank you GE and Andrea!

Global Experiences provided such a well rounded intern abroad summer for me in Sydney. The internship placement was smooth and I was very happy with my host company. The hours for my internship were flexible and I was able to gain new accounting knowledge. I was also able to travel around Australia a good bit as well on the weekends. The social scene at our housing and around Sydney was such a fun time. I would definitely recommend this program. The money in life will come back, but the adventures you make won’t!

I would definitely recommend this company if you’re in your young 20’s looking for programs to get internships with other college aged kids looking to travel in their free time.
There are a lot of different programs that you can apply to and all offer ways to earn credits for traveling.
Overall the program was very easy to apply and get set up with, and they provided everything i needed to get abroad and to get credits at my college for my internship.

I really enjoyed my internship. I feel like I got a jump ahead in terms of experience in my field of study. My coworkers and supervisors were great- very friendly and willing to help me learn. Outside of that, being in Australia was an excellent time. Even though it was winter, I was able to spend pretty sufficient time on the beach. The GE excursions included a trip to the Hunter Valley wine country and a trip to the Blue Mountains, both of which I enjoyed thoroughly. The living accommodations were nice, too.

This was an amazing experience. I am so grateful I found such an amazing program that supported me every step of the way. I was able to explore the other side of the world, and develop professionally. I met other interns in so many different fields as well. The program coordinator, Andrea, was amazing! She made sure everything went smoothly from the second I landed in Australia. I have made so many amazing memories and learned so much from this experience! The scariest part about going overseas is figuring out how to do it. This program helped me every step of the way.

Working and living in Sydney was an incredible experience this summer. My local coordinator, Andrea, worked super hard to make sure we had a great place to live and she also set up a bunch of different excursions for our group. I wasn't sure what to expect on my trip, but I found a lot of comfort in both familiar foods and activities as well as new experiences. The transportation options were incredible and the city was easy to get around. I loved my time in the city and I'm looking forward to coming back to Australia whenever I can.

I have learned so many valuable lessons and skills during my internship with Global Experiences. I think one of the most important things I have learned is independence. Moving across the world is an incredibly big commitment, so to be able to do that alone is a great achievement, however, I have also had the responsibility of caring for myself without the help of family or close friends nearby. Global Experiences provided all of the resources necessary to succeed and excel in this environment, and wanted nothing but the best for us. They offered many interesting day trips and excursions for us to explore all that beautiful Australia has to offer, and really tried to make us feel at home. The program coordinator, Andrea, went above and beyond to make everyone feel comfortable, included, and welcome.
I have also found this internship to be very valuable in terms of communication and networking as you meet so many other interns through global experiences, as well as an abundance of professionals in your line of work with similar interests. This has provided me with friendships that will last a lifetime, and memories I will cherish forever!

Overall great experience. Australia was always on my bucket list and this was a great way to see Australia and gain work experience. It was great to meet other people from different Universities across the United States (and some Canadian). Sydney had everything for every interest. There was never a time where I was bored in Sydney. We took lots of day trips and some weekend trips to see different parts of Australia. If you have the chance to come, take it. It is an amazing culture to see! Also, the internship allows you to learn about the field you are interested in, but get a different perspective. You get to learn about the work life in Australia and network with many people!

Why did you choose this program?

I joined this program for a billion reasons but for the sake of the people reading this I’ll try to shorten it down. After traveling to Spain on a family trip over the summer, I developed the travel bug. No one in my family had ever studied abroad but I couldn’t find a reason not too. Besides traveling, making new friends, and living my life to the fullest...I’ll be attending grad school in a year and they rank international work very high. Just a little added bonus :)

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Salisbury University does a fantastic job taking most of the organization out of my hands. My only tasks consisted of getting a few forms signed, a few phone calls with the global experiences team (resume prep, skill building, etc.), and then completing an interview for my internship. The school was very supportive and made sure I was on top of my tasks. They were always there to answer my questions and put me at ease.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I have 2 big pieces of advice
1. SAY YES TO EVERYTHING! Even if something isn’t up your alley, try something new. That being said, try to cross one big thing of your To Do list every week. Also, download the “Pin Drop” app. It marks everything you want to do on a map. SUPER CONVENIENT!
2. Don’t except an internship if it’s not exactly what you’re looking for. I personally loved my internship but one of my roommates didn’t step up and say that she didn’t like the internship they lined up for her. This program is extremely accommodating and will find an internship you’ll love. They’re really big on having a 10 out of 10 experience.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

My internship was very different in hours compared to everyone else. Most internships are 9-5 from Monday-Friday. Most days after work, I’d try to get together with the other people in the program and grab dinner or do a small activity. On the weekends I always tried to do something BIG. By doing this, I crossed off everything on my list!

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was actually commuting to my job. I found out a month before going to Australia that my internship was 2 hours away by transit (most are local). I didn’t find out until the week before I got to Australia (when my boss emailed me) that she picks me up and drops me off from work 3 days of the week. Global experiences knew this too but I didn’t ask. I simply uberpooled (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) the other days. Most of the time I saved 50% off my Uber fee and they didn't pick anyone else up. I realized that commuting to work wasn’t even worth fearing. If you’re uneasy about something, talk to the global experiences staff or email your employer.

What were your favorite things you did in Australia?

-Great Barrier Reef (a little piece of advice, you’ll want 3-4 days here at least!)

Manda is the Location Coordinator for the Sydney program at Global Experiences. Manda is a fun-loving Aussie who enjoys spending time outside, being with her friends and family, working on a variety of projects, and unexpectedly discovering what life has in-store for her. Like you, she is also relatively new to Sydney, having moved from a smaller nearby city in 2008. She is still learning new things about this place every day and loving every minute of my time here.

Tell us a little about yourself. Have you ever interned or worked abroad?

Manda: I am a people-person. Ever since I was young, I’ve always enjoyed looking after and helping others in one way or another. Life has led me on an interesting journey – on top of working with young children for my whole life, I have also helped to start-up a small charity, worked on a play and a short-film, and now landed in the role of Sydney Location Coordinator with Global Experiences.

I haven’t interned or worked abroad, but I did complete a three-week exchange program to Italy during high school. This was like a younger and more-condensed version of a GE internship – I spent 2 weeks at a local school with my host siblings, was taken to see the sights and sounds of Rome by my host parents and the company, and then the other exchange students and I packed our bags and gallivanted around the rest of the country for a week. It was an amazing experience. I met some lovely people, learned a lot about the language and culture and experienced some moments of culture shock, and awe!

What makes interning in Sydney a unique experience for international interns?

Manda: Sydney is a very iconic and multicultural city in the heart of the Asia-Pacific region. Quite simply, where else in the world can you see a gorgeous sandy beach from your office, cross a Coathanger to work, or say G’day to your boss every morning? Plus, you’ll get to live in the future for a few months thanks to our time zones!

What can you tell us about the workplace culture in Sydney?

Manda: Most workplaces and people in Sydney are a lot more relaxed than in other countries. Not everyone works in a crowded office or wears a suit and tie to work every day; that said, each job is different. My best tip for anyone starting an internship is to dress to impress, physically and personally, on your first day, but know how to be flexible and adjust to what your colleagues wear and do. Taking on part of the culture is a good part of learning your way in a new country.

What are some extracurricular activities participants enjoy while interning in Sydney?

Manda: Global Experiences participants receive more than just an internship! The program comes complete with a Location Coordinator who is their personal tour guide and has organized a range of events to show them the see the sights and sounds of Sydney in a truly unique way. Each program is different because each intern is different; however, your social calendar may include experiences such as: a trip to the Blue Mountains, one-on-one encounters with native Australian animals, a tour of the Opera House, a surfing lesson, whale watching, a harbor cruise, or an Australian sporting match.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering interning abroad in Sydney?

Manda: Leap and the world will catch you! That’s right, all you have to do is say one little word – “Yes”. Just visit the Global Experiences website, apply for an internship in one of our 9 international locations, and leave the rest to us! The team at Global Experiences will make it a program to remember.

Don’t forget that on top of having a simply fantastic time on the other side of the world, you’ll also receive a style of work experience unlike most others. Almost all companies across the world will choose to hire a previous international intern over someone else, and you could quite easily earn a higher salary too!
