Regenwald projekt

  • Geringer “Lebensstandard”

Three weeks at the Eco Lodge

For three weeks I worked as a volunteer at the Eco-Lodge. The work was starting early in the morning and was physically demanding, for example cutting weeds around small trees.
I really liked the hike in the rainforest where we slept one night in an hammock. The other days I lived in a simple room of the staff.
You should expect that you are far from civilization where you can not get to a supermarket and you do not have internet. To get a mobile phone reception you have to do a small walk to the river.
If you like nature, time for your own and animals like horses, I can recommend you this project. It is an unhurried life there, but because of that you have to wait sometimes a while for someone.

Thanks to firsthand, with their organization and information it was much easier to travel the first time alone in a foreign country.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
I had two nerve-racking moments: One was on a walk in the rainforest where we passed a snake and one of the staff told me that this was one of the most poisonous snakes. Nevertheless, another staff member took his phone and came very close to the snake to take a photo.
The other one was on the way to the lodge where we needed to cross a river. That day it had rained much, so the river was much bigger than normal. We could not drive through it with the car and it was getting dark. So we needed to cross the river with a zipline in the dark.

Incredible experiences!

I would say it was the best time in my life because of the diverse activities and works. For example accompany tourist for a hike, helping in the kitchen, planting a tree, ridding plants of weeds or accompany students which explores the rainforest during the excursion. I had so much fun and it was so interesting to talk with staffs. They taught me a lot of their lifestyle and their culture.
You’re living there such a different life compare to your „normal“ life. It´s a big step to finding yourself in the natural environment. You have a strict agenda every day and you are doing a good job against rainforest deforestation, well it worth it. And you’re seeing it with your own eyes how hard is the reality. I will never forget this time. After I left I realized a lot, go there and you will see :) The accommodation was really nice and comfortable.

Pros
  • Working outside
  • Go for a hike
  • Learning a lot of the environment

Selva Bananito Lodge Rainforest Preservation

The 10 weeks were an exciting and great time. Although there is no internet (almost 😊, at the river with luck you might have up to 2 bars with Kolbi) I enjoyed my stay very much. It was nice to work together with the local team. Even though my Spanish was not very good, we understood each other somehow. With 4 volunteers it was a great time, especially since we became very good friends. We made two trips during our stay to Cahuita using our free days. But staying alone in the lodge is also an incredible experience. There´s a lot of time for inner reflection and the rainforest with it`s never dying sound is a great environment. Like me you will make the experience to see a lot of animals. Sometimes it´s hard to take a photo, but your mind will always remember what you saw. It´s an incredible nature. You will become familiar with a lot of animals even in your room. Geckos, Spiders, Frogs, Snakes and Scorpions are always around and of course many birds, totally different in color and behavior. Furthermore, with a little luck you`ll see, Night Monkeys (Kinkajous), Agutis, Racoons, Howler Monkeys, tbc….
The work at the lodge is not too hard, but you should be fit. Some works were really challenging for me and the other. I would recommend bringing working gloves and be aware that you must work in rain boots. They have many sizes at the lodge, but if you have big or very small feet you should bring your own. A flashlight is a must. There are no lights in the lodge and to avoid snake attacks in the night (at 6 p.m. it`s dark) you need to have one.
The food is pretty good. Although you will have rice and beans almost three times a day it is added with other food like noodles, eggs, cheese, salad, other vegetables and more. Everything is very tasty and you will like it.
Thank you to the team, you were great. I´ll remember this time as one of the best in my life.

Pros
  • Great Environment
  • Good people
  • Fantastic nature
Cons
  • less posibillities for leisure activities
  • dificult to leave for a weekend
  • Eletrical power and Internet are restricted
