ITA - TEFL Certification Program

I decided to get my TEFL certification as I had just graduated college and was not sure what I wanted to do with my life, so traveling and teaching English seemed like an exciting career path to pursue. At first, I was just participating in the course so that I had a cheaper option to travel to a different country, but after actively engaging in the course material and the enthusiasm my teachers and other classmates had for this subject, I was also excited to continued my studies. ITA had a clear, concise, organized way of presenting and teaching the information and I would highly recommend the program to anyone that is considering teaching English as a foreign language.

Pros
  • Organized material
  • Quick course duration
  • Vast amount of resources
Cons
  • Not as flexible with deadlines
  • Not as "hands-on"
  • Tutoring experience is found solely by students

TEFL Online Course

I completed the 11-week online TEFL course. Overall, I would definitely recommend it! The content is extensive and informative, including a lot of general teaching advice as well as advice specifically for teaching English. They also have a lot of videos with advice from current and former EFL/ESL teachers which I found really helpful. The classes are small so the instructor was quick to respond and gave really good feedback.

It definitely is time consuming. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and spend fair amount of time on the assignments. You do make several lesson plans which is great practice when you can get feedback on them, but it takes time. I did this course while going to college full time and did struggle somewhat, but it's manageable. Just don't expect to get by putting in minimal time and effort.

Even though it is more expensive than other TEFL courses I researched, I think it's worth it for how much you learn and how helpful the resources are. They constantly have discounts so watch out for when they drop the price $100-$300 (I got mine $300 off). BUT, the price doesn't include the textbook, which isn't required, but I didn't realize that going in and it felt a bit sneaky. You also lose access to the online material after 3 months so you have to save anything you want to look at in the future. Other than that, I don't regret spending the money.

ITA Intensive 4-week TEFL

I really enjoyed this program and am so glad I did it. The intensive is a lot of work but it's worth it and the content is excellent. My instructors (Nicole and Julia) were both awesome. It's a lot of information in a short amount of time so having live class on Zoom every day was super helpful. Nicole's lectures are interesting, very participatory, never monotonous and you hear everyone perspectives on things. Julia's feedback is great. Her practicums were super fun to teach and the students are so nice. I highly recommend this certification.

Pros
  • Excellent instructors
  • Easy to use online format
  • Really learned a lot
Cons
  • Clear your schedule - its a lot of work

TEFL Course

My teaching experience has been in the classroom only and the ITA course was online and very different for me. The staff and teacher were very helpful and always answered me within a quick time frame. The ITA course was challenging but not overwhelming and is in all a great course to prepare you for any teaching experience you may pursue overseas and online. I have yet to move overseas as this time and am waiting for my retirement. ITA is there to help in my transitional move to Spain when the time comes. It is peace of mind to know that ITA has the structure and staff ready, set in place to start this transition at any time for me. A great Course and group of people who enjoy their work in teaching and really show it! Thank you ITA all.

Pros
  • Challenging
  • Preparedness
  • Cover all aspects of teaching abroad
Cons
  • A short course on actually using the computer to teach online using the course materials to help better prepare those not so savvy with the computer

Excellent course, exciting possibilities

ITA's 11-week online TEFL certification course gave me an excellent foundation. The materials, examples, and videos were comprehensive, and the assignments made me put what I was learning to practical use. I found it challenging in a good way.

I am now working with one of ITA's student advisors to plan my next steps teaching abroad. She has been very helpful in providing tons of resources and recommendations. I'm looking at several possible destinations, and ITA has connections all over and extensive, very practical information for aspiring TEFL teachers to find those open doors.

All in all, I highly recommend ITA's program to anyone who loves teaching English and is ready to put it into practice.

TEFL Certification Course Graduate April 2019

I was a graduate of International TEFL Academy in April 2019. I learned a lot from the course and its contents. The online interface was very organized and easy to navigate. The teacher who was in charge of our group was very responsive and kind. She motivated us with her comments on our assignments. I enjoyed making my teaching plans and also the volunteer work / class observation that I did in my community in order to satisfy my practicum hours. Overall, it was a well-balanced and well-organized online TEFL program.

Pros
  • Well-organized curriculum
  • Videos included with each chapter of modules
  • Supportive staff and teachers
Cons
  • Class voice calls / meetings were not necessary, only chat communication

TESOL

The training I received (almost 10 years ago) has been a crucial part of my success in teaching. I remained in Costa Rica after my certification and moved to Jaco. It was there that I started teaching in a Montessori school and began growing a clientele of students. My students were professionals, service industry workers, doctors, dentists and many young school age students. The demand was so great that I opened my doors for a language academy and hired additional teachers. It was, hands down, the best decision I have ever made and it was all done when I turned 50 and retired from my first career! Pura Vida

Pros
  • Diversity
  • Understanding cultural barriers
  • Learning about another culture
Cons

Three years abroad

With Intarnational TEFL Academy I had tha chans to go to both Thailand and China, looking back I might have stayed in Thailand longer, but wanted to try China as well.
A little warning though China is a Culture shock like you would not believe, but it is the best place if you want to make and save money.
I love to travel and having a TEFL cetificate opens the entire world, however if you go to Europe your living expenses is exactly the same as your salary so you will always break even. Carpe Diem.

Pros
  • Able to save
  • Get to experience different cultures
  • Cheap inland travel in the country you're in
Cons
  • Visa challenges
  • Expensive to get to the country
  • Language barriers

Yes, many people take TEFL courses who are not native English speakers, they need to be proficient in English to be accepted into TEFL classes and have excellent English to be able to work in schools. Here's an article:https://www.internationalteflacademy.com/non-native-english…

The answer is it depends entirely on which country you choose to teach in. I made a lot of money in China but it is not an easy place to live.
