Best Work Experience Decision I've Made

I cannot recommend this experience more! I studied abroad in Madrid during univestiy and was dying to find a way back. I found a few internship programs and felt like it was my answer! After a LOT of research on the various programs, The Intern Group looked like the best....I was truly right on that decision! The entire team has been so supportive and caring both before and after arrival. If I have any question or doubt, they are quick to answer and assist. I have not once felt like I didn't receive superior support. The program itself offers a lot of activities so you never feel alone! I may be lucky, but the interns in my program have been phenomenal and we truly have formed a family here. We actively hang out with one another outside of the programmed events as well. There have been about 8-16 people here throughout my time in the program. I was worried about making friends but to my surprise, I have never been more social!

My apartment is great! I have a large room and nice kitchen and bathroom. I have seen quite a few other apartments and they vary a lot (rooms can be small or big, kitchens are very different, some cleaner/newer than others). Most are in ideal locations. I do wish they would be a bit better about cleaning services and you do need to clean your own room. Most apartments are mixed-gender and shared with people outside of the program. I haven't had any negative experience with roommates though! People are super friendly!

In terms of work experience, I have grown so much both personally and professionally through this program. I absolutely love my company here and the work that I do! I clearly expressed in my application my goals for work experience and they delivered! Working in an international environment has allowed me to learn so much more than I ever would back in the US. I work with people from so many different backgrounds, have learned how to communicate and work with people very different than myself, how to adapt to a completely new work environment with new social and cultural norms, and have truly narrowed what I want to do career wise. As far as an internship, this experience has been much more enriching than the internships I have had in the past.

Yes, you do have to pay for an unpaid internship but given the events, housing, and support they provide in securing an internship, it is well worth the money! I couldn't recommend it more!

Pros
  • Amazing support from the team before and during the internship
  • Phenomenal work experience
  • Absolutely amazing connections with people from all over the world
Cons
  • Cleaning services took a month+ to arrive
  • Not all program held activities are paid for (e.g. if the program offers rooftop drinks, you have to pay for your drink)

Madrid Internship

My experience in Madrid was amazing. I was very lucky to have the opportunity to work for a very well established organisation. They provided me with great learning opportunities and treated me very well. I met some of the best people whilst living in madrid and I am still in touch with them a whole year later. Having the IG intern on my resume has also been very helpful when applying for jobs. I found that employers are very interested in these types of experiences and that it is a great talking point for personal growth and skill development.

The best experience

I really enjoyed having this opportunity, I think that is the best way to start building your resume while you get to know another culture and live the experience having new challenges. All the intern group team is super supportive and they really make an effort for offering you the best experience. They were always there, even for the minimal doubt. Also I loved that there were fun activities in order to show you new places or give you a cultural immersion of the City and also they are also helpful because they facilitate to get to know the other interns

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Really enjoy the time and organize in order to make the most of it

The Intern Group Programme - Madrid

The Intern Group programme in Madrid was an incredible experience and opportunity for myself. I worked in a forward thinking organisation, on projects involving EU funding, and gained experience in a field I hope to work in. I met friends from all over the world, with whom I have travelled with and hope there will be more adventures to come. This programme has really given me an insight into what I want for my future and the goals I now intend to pursue. It’s a great chance to step out of your comfort zone and push yourself to learn new things. I am grateful for the support and activities organised by Lalita and hope to meet her again when I return to Spain for my future studies.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve wracking moment was meeting my employers for the first time and speaking in Spanish with them. This was challenging and made me feel nervous in my ability to communicate. I overcame this by being calm, talking each task step by step, asking for help where I needed it, and having faith in my ability to learn and improve. My confidence with my Spanish has gotten so much better and I am ready to continue learning this incredible language.

The Interngroup- Madrid: Review

A famous quote states that “great achievements emerge from great opportunities.”

Whether it was hard-work, effort and dedication, an enormous coincidence of life, destiny itself, or something else, I feel very lucky for the fact that I was given a great opportunity for professional and personal growth.

I could not be more grateful to The Interngroup and The International Business Hub for having so much trust in my abilities, values and in me overall; I hope I can correspond by bringing great results to the table as well.

I am also thankful with the housing administration for paying close attention to the needs and wants of their residents and for keeping a detail-oriented approach to make the experience even better.

It is crucial to mention that I have felt very welcomed and well-treated by the vast majority of people that I’ve met so far here in Madrid, which have been very polite and friendly to me overall. I also hope they can get a positive impression of me in general terms.

I still have a couple of months left in this program, and I am hopeful that by the end of it I can look back and be proud of the professional and personal progress being achieved. Meanwhile, I also desire to explore much more of this wonderful city. Madrid’s prolific monuments, beautiful edifications, delicious food, fascinating landscapes, and unique culture are only some of the things that continue to amaze me every single day.

Going back to the quote from the beginning, I’m aware of the great opportunity I have right here and now as an intern, and I hope to advantage it to the greatest possible extent and be able to make great achievements and reach my goals.

By Daniel.

Internship in Madrid

My experience with the Interngroup in Madrid has been rewarding and fulfilling, both in terms of the social encounters I have made and the professional skills I have gained. Whilst studying Media and Communications in the UK, I completed a PR and marketing internship with a venture and law company, as I am passionate about the PR industry and want to pursue a career in this field. While my tasks initially included social media management, they have gradually expanded to include creating LinkedIn and Instagram ads, writing the newsletter and blog, but also contacting newspapers to place our content! It is true that the internship in Madrid has far exceeded my expectations and my previous concerns about making friends in a country where I don't speak the language or adapting to this new working environment were swept away as soon as I met my new flatmates and started working. The intergroup did a fantastic job of integrating me and I never felt alone or left out. On the contrary, I felt like I never had a minute to myself and never had enough time to do all the projects and plans I wanted to do! If I were to give any advice to any new interns or those considering applying, it would be to start the programme with an open mind, positivity but also perseverance and hard work from day one, an attitude that eventually allowed me to extend my contract with my company and gradually be offered more responsibilities! The social aspect of the programme and the new bounds I have created have made my experience one that I will never forget and contributed to shape me as a more mature and fulfilled individual.

What was your funniest moment?
We decided to visit Alicante, a city in Spain, with my group of friends, and I was the one who took care of the airbnb booking; a beautiful flat with sea view and enough rooms for everyone! On our way to Alicante, exactly two hours before arriving, the owner informs me that there is no way I booked a flat that day as the flat had to be occupied for the next 4 days.... After a long argumentation with the owner, the sending of the documents stating that I have indeed paid and booked that flat, I realise that not only had I booked the wrong days but also the wrong month! The end of the story is rather happy, I managed to get the refund thanks to the 24 hours cancellation policy and I found a new flat in the city centre... A stressful moment that ended with a good laugh!

Valuable internship experience

The internship experience has proved to help me quite a lot in developing my self professionally and personally. The internship has also helped me widen and broaden my skill set by continuously refreshing and practicing them at the work place hence, I have also managed to gain transferable skills which will be extremely handy whilst applying for this to a postgraduate degree. This internship has helped me grow out of my comfort zone and enabled me to change my outlook in the field I interned at.

What would you improve about this program?
Better training, workshops, resources and frequent personally helpful events

Summer in Madrid

I had the opportunity to complete my marketing internship in Madrid this summer. I can honestly say it was the best decision I made. Not only did I get the marketing experience and credit from my school but I also had an amazing time. I experienced being part of a new culture and traveling alone for the first time. It was safe and there is always something going on whether it be an event from the program or just events around the city. The events hosted by the program are really fun and helps you get accustomed to the new changes. All the events are different so its a new experience every time. As for my internship, the process was very easy and everything is explained very well. My supervisors from my job were really nice and always answered any questions I had regarding my tasks.

What would you improve about this program?
Having a fan or AC in the apartment would be my only improvement.

Questions & Answers

Hi Verica! Whether these internships are paid or not is down to each specific placement company! However, their international internships do tend to be unpaid.

Hiya, Living situation wasn't bad at all, your usually with other interns. When I first got there I was a bit surprised at the flat as I thought it was going to be more like a uni halls or something, but the decor is quite dark and relatively small. Also had an oven that you had to light yourself which was an experience! Haha. But you get used to it really quickly and I loved my flat by the end. I...

I was in Madrid for two months and had prepared about €1600. I did budget and because I was very careful with money at the start I had quite a bit left over towards the end. It also depends on how much you eat out because that does get quite expensive.
